What's your first reaction when you see a pregnant woman smoking? Sonia saw it happen this week while driving downtown, and when she mentioned her concern on the show, it spurred a huge debate on the show and online. We received over 500 messages on our Facebook pages, Twitter, text messages and the phones lit up for an hour.
Is it ever okay to smoke while pregnant? The emotionally-charged discussion featured a number of listeners who said that their doctors actually advised them against quitting cold-turkey could actually shock the system and harm the baby. Others in the medical community refuted it, saying it was dated advice, no longer recommended to patients as a result of newer research.
We reached out to Dr. Jeanne Mace here in Kelowna, who specializes in family medicine and has dealt with women struggling with addictions during pregnancy to clear the confusion and offer advice for expectant mothers who are smokers. It's a must-listen if you or someone you know is pregnant.
