Eye-Witness Video of the Russian Meteor
2/15/2013
It looks like something straight out of the movies. Early this morning, a 10 tonne meteorite exploded over central Russia, impacting a reported 3000 buildings and injuring 900+ people. Thankfully most of those injured only sustained minor cuts and bruises though a few do have head injuries.
A number of witnesses to the meteor were able to capture real-time video of the event:
Incidentally, a large asteroid will be zipping by today (Feb. 15), coming within 28,000 km of Earth- the closest approach ever seen for an object its size (it has a diameter roughly equal to an Olympic-size swimming pool). Now before you panic, the meteor is Russia and the asteroid are unrelated and we're not at any further risk. The asteroid will be at its peak brightness at 11:24 a.m. PST.
