Album Review

The Crests had two original LP releases on Coed Records, The Crests Sing All Biggies and The Best of the Crests, each containing 16 songs. Sundazed's reissue of The Best of the Crests, retitled Isn't It Amazing, alters the track list to eliminate three songs that overlapped between the two original albums. Those three songs -- "16 Candles," "Six Nights a Week," and "The Angels Listened In" -- all of which are hits, are available on the companion CD The Crests Sing All Biggies. In place of those three cuts, Isn't It Amazing preserves the 16-song format by adding three previously unreleased recordings from 1960. Unlike the Crests' first album, which consists mostly of covers of then-current hits by other artists, The Best of the Crests gathers up hit and non-hit singles. Even with the deletion of the aforementioned hits, Isn't It Amazing still manages to round up six chart entries, from the dreamy "Journey of Love" to the rockin' title track. The omission of "16 Candles," the group's biggest hit, limits the collection's utility as an overarching anthology, but conveniently rounds up many of the single sides of this popular racially integrated doo wop ensemble. If taken in combination, The Crests Sing All Biggies and Isn't It Amazing collect most of the group's Coed output.
