The Dells' two ABC albums on one CD:
New Beginnings (1978) and
Face to Face (1979). While nothing major emerged from either,
the Dells' remakes of
Parliament's "I Wanna Testify" and "All Your Goodies Are Gone" were admired by urban stoners. And the rambunctious "My Life Is So Wonderful (When You're Around)" is finding fans amongst oldies collectors. All three, including "Cherish" and the melodic "Slipped, Tripped, Stumble and Fell" (also done by
Al Hudson & the Soul Partners), are from
New Beginnings.
Face to Face is OK but not as immediate, though "(You Bring Out) The Best in Me," the epic "Changed Man," and "Hooked on Loving You" are solid. Classic
Dells fans disliked the
Parliament remakes and the attempt to commercialize their sound, and given a choice would opt for
Face to Face tracks, which don't take as many chances.
