Crews work to contain flooding in South Okanagan

4/28/2012

Some residents in the Chute Lake area are still waiting to find out when they'll be able to return home after the risk of flash flooding forced them to evacuate.

The Regional District of Okanagan-Similkameen still has an evacuation order in place for 47 homes in Indian Rock, just west of the Lake.

District Emergency Services Supervisor Dale Kronebusch says 18 people have been moved to hotels in Penticton.

He adds that crews worked overnight to get the water under control.

"The Lake actually dropped about 4 inches overnight and perhaps we can maybe speed it up in a controlled fashion."

Officials are expected to decide whether to keep the evacuation order in place some time on Saturday.

Heavy rains and melting snow pack are blamed for flooding in areas of the South Okanagan, Tulameen and West Kelowna.
