Vernon Has A New Outdoor Pickleball Court
Sport is gaining popularity
7/13/2012
If you've driven by Sawicki Park in the last few weeks and taken a look at the tennis courts, you may have noticed some new yellow lines on court #1. Those yellow lines make up the playing areas of Vernon's 4 new outdoor pickleball courts. Pickleball is one of the fastest growing sports in the country among active older adults and here in Vernon, there is a committed group that have been filling up the Priest Valley Gym at the Recreation Centre for the past year.
After discussions with the Regional District in an effort to find an outdoor space, Sawicki Park was decided upon as a suitable first location. The Regional District had lines painted and purchased 4 portable pickleball nets, all of which can all be used simultaneously on the one tennis court. The nets can be rented from the Recreation Centre by reserving them in advance. Please call 545-6035 if you'd like to give it a try. There is no charge to rent the nets, however a credit card is needed as a damage deposit.
If you are someone looking for a consistent set time to play pickleball, if you are interested in trying it for the first time or perhaps don't have a partner, Recreation Services has created two pickleball programs to help out. On Mondays and Wednesdays from 9-11am and on Thursdays from 6pm to dusk, Recreation Services has the court reserved to run social pickleball programs. Court #2 will still usable for tennis while the pickleball courts are in use. If you're not sure about signing up for an entire season, you can pay a $5 drop in fee to go and check it out.
