THE LATEST: Wilson's Landing Fire now 100 percent contained

7/28/2012

Fire crews from both Vernon and Penticton remain on the scene of a fire burning in the hills near the Wilson's Landing area in Kelowna and have now managed to contain the fire 100 percent.

Michaela Swan, Fire Information Officer with BC Wildfires says,"We've now mapped the fire at 4.4 hectares in size, I can confirm that as of 12:00 noon today, we are now calling the fire 100 percent contained."

Swan also adds that people will still be able to see open flame and smoke in the area, and fire crews will remain on site throughout the day as they work to remove any unburnt fuels that remain within the guard.

"The fire will not spread, but you may see flare ups within the actual burn area of the fire" Swan says.

On Saturday, fire officials called in support from Air Water Bombers and a helicopter to help contain the blaze which quickly spread from its original size of half a hectare to 2.5 hectares in size.

The fire is believed to have been caused by lightning that moved through the area on Friday night.

This needs updating. Westside Road is officially closed by M.O.T south end at Bear Lake Main and north end around Jenny Creek Estates entrance and Westside Road. Fire has been slowly spreading in a south south east direction, Westside firemen have been knocking down fires that have made it down to the road and a few spot fires on the lake side of Westside Road. Air support will be back in the around around 5:00 am according to Forestry. There was no forestry personnel at the fire when it started to flare up, you would think with the fire not a couple of days old that they would have people watching it over night.
